Elegant, quirky, vivacious, dramatic — the make-up by Viji Sharma can bring about any of these features or more. Her make up adds a dimension to the personality as opposed to overpowering it.
Viji, a braveheart left her successful corporate career to follow her calling and has since done wonders with her art. She says she derives here deepest happiness by making women feel beautiful. A beautiful thought from a beautiful make up artist. And to take a step ahead in this direction she also holds workshops for would be brides and office goers. Intrigued as we naturally were to know about her work, we asked her a few questions …

I’ll start with a female! I really love a makeup artist called Banu (she does Rajinikanth’s makeup among many other celebrities). I’m in awe of her work and she was the first female artist to enter the south industry. Her story is very inspiring.
I love my mentor Nahush, he is amazing. He is the first person I reach out to anytime I feel stuck with a concept or an idea. I also love Daniel Bauer, Mickey Contractor, Clint Frenandes, FATMU team, Marvie-Ann Beck, Sara Capela… this list can go on and on…there are many many artists I admire.

Every event is special in a way. Wedding is the most important day in any girl’s life. For a girl to trust me with her image on the most important day of her life is a privilege. Brides have this amazing glow to their skin, they look gorgeous, I love bring part of that experience.
Fashion shoots (commercial) are team effort. You get to meet lot of creative people on set. Its quite interesting. It can get quite hectic, but at the end of the day when the pictures comes out great, it makes your day.
My favourite, however are creative shoots. Its usually either photographer or makeup artist’s vision. There is no commercial aspect to it. We work for days, sometimes weeks on a concept to bring it to life just for the fun of creating something. I get to experiment with new textures, colours, patterns during this process. I thoroughly enjoy it.
[/vc_toggle] [vc_toggle title=”How did this idea of holding workshops happended? If you can tell us a bit more about these group and personal workshops, they are quite interesting. How often you do them and how it helps others?” open=”true”]
One of the main reasons I pursued makeup as my career, is that it gives me great joy in making women look and feel beautiful. And when I say women, I don’t just mean celebrities, models or brides. I want every women to feel this way and workshop is a great way to do that. That’s how the idea of workshop came about. I have being doing workshops right from day one. I’m able to conduct workshops only once a month currently but I would love to increase this frequency.
In these workshops we spend a lot of time discussing how to choose makeup products or how to get the most out of the product that you currently have in your kit. We go through techniques of applying makeup and tools you need for that. I then demonstrate 2 looks ( day/evening), which the participants get to try on themselves. The whole session is very interactive. The aim of the workshop is to make women feel confident about the wearing makeup and totally rock it!

Brides these days want very natural finish to their makeup. The days of one inch thick makeup with rainbow coloured eyes, where the groom can’t recognise the bride are gone. The modern bride wants look natural, classy and elegant.
[/vc_toggle] [vc_toggle title=”What it the common mistake brides tends to make and what would you suggest as opposed to what they currently do?” open=”true”]
Well, I don’t see brides make any major mistake as such. In fact, most brides that I have worked with have amazing skin which is a good indication of a healthy system.
The general advice I give brides is – eat healthy, sleep well and drink plenty of water. But if you do end up partying hard and staying up late, don’t worry there is concealer 😉
[/vc_toggle] [vc_toggle title=”Who are your favourite celebrity brides who carried off it in style in regards to make-up?” open=”true”]
Hmmm. It’s a tough one. I don’t follow celebrities news that much, so won’t know who got married recently. I saw pictures of Kareena Kapoor’s wedding makeup. It really liked it.
[/vc_toggle] [vc_toggle title=”What has been your most interesting or dangerous assignment?” open=”true” el_position=”last”]
The most interesting look is definitely the pop-art series. It had a mix of mythology, comic & beauty. I found that quite interesting.
The dangerous one is of course the cover of the new age bridal series. I was doing touch-up on a wobbly plank in a lake while it was pouring (not pleasant at all!). We intend to do a shoot on an aircraft. I can’t talk much about it right now but I’m sure that would surely beat this…quite looking forward to it though 🙂
